1(1) NEW SOFTWARE RELEASE Version 1.00 ==================== Products involved: AXIS Print System including AXIS Print Monitor and AXIS IP Installer Release date: 99-07-01 Release type: PRODUCTION Software version: AXIS Print System 1.00 AXIS Print Monitor 3.00 AXIS IP Installer 1.51 Software media: CD-ROM Last preceding release: AXIS Print System: None AXIS Print Monitor: 2.03 AXIS IP Installer: 1.00 -------------------------------------------------------------- Release description: 1. AXIS Print System adds printer discovery, printer driver installation printing on Windows platforms. Printing is enabled by AXIS Print Monitor, which is one of the components. Another component in AXIS Print System is AXIS IP Installer. AXIS Print Monitor: 2. Improved the cancel print job for the NetBIOS/NetBEUI protocol. Sometimes the Print Server was not notified that the print job was canceled, and therefore did not accept the next print job. 3. The Print Monitor can now print documents with the empty name "", using the LPR protocol, which some programs named their documents before submitting. 4. Handles shutdown problems on some Windows 98 and on some laptops, which caused Windows to stop the shutdown process. 5. In addition to the NetBIOS/NetBEUI and LPR protocol now also RAW TCP is supported. This protocol is by default used by AXIS Print System. Further information is available on request: Appendix A: Technical description of the release Appendix B: Software limitations Appendix A - TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE RELEASE 1(1) Product involved: AXIS Print System Software version: 1.00 -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Appendix B - SOFTWARE LIMITATIONS 1(1) Product involved: AXIS Print System Software version: 1.00 -------------------------------------------------------------- AXIS Print Systems runs on Intel X86 platforms. AXIS Print System ----------------- Paper out message will not be reported to the client if the printer goes out of paper and the remaining of the print job is less than 13 Kbytes. This depends on that the print server keep the data in it's internal buffer. Remaining data will be printed if when new paper is filled into the printer. The same behavior will be seen if the print job is smaller than 13Kbytes. When setting a specific date for scanning after printer drivers, it can take a couple of minutes after the specified time until the scanning starts. This depends on that the polling of this event is done every 5 minutes. Windows NT/2000. If other Print Providers than the one provided by Microsoft is installed on a computer, the scanning for printer drivers over the network could fail due to lack of functionality in the other Print Providers. This could be the case if e.g. a NetWare client is installed. Accessing a print server from AXIS Print System within 30 seconds after a printer is connected could result in a temporary hanging of the print server. Please wait approximately 30 seconds and the problem is avoided. This behavior can be seen also if accessing the print servers web pages. Problems with Windows 2000 beta 3. Installing printers and copying drivers over the network sometimes fails. Axis will continuously follow the releases of the new W2000 beta versions. Sharing of printers in Windows NT can be done using the "Custom" installation wizard. This is not possible in W95/98. Instead the standard Windows procedure by selecting sharing in the printer object should be used. Installation of printers having the driver in a setup.exe file is not supported by AXIS Print System. E.g. Epson and Fujitsu provide such files for some of their printers. You have to manually run the setup file first and then install the printer as normal with AXIS Print System. AXIS Print Monitor ------------------ When running Microsoft Add Printer wizard immediately after the monitor is installed or after reboot, the list with available AXIS Ports may be empty. Go back in the wizard, wait and retry to get the list with AXIS Ports. On shared printers, the status of the printer is reported only to Windows NT 4 clients. The status reporting is handled by Windows. If a NetBIOS/NetBEUI print job is suspended for more than about 3 minutes (e.g. when the printer is out of paper), the print job will be restarted from the beginning. This is according to the behavior of Microsoft's NetBIOS implementation. If a printer is Offline when a print job is started, no pop-up message will be issued. The reason is that the print job is pending in the spooler and the AXIS Print Monitor is not called until the printer is Online. Printing small print jobs ( <4 kb) using the LPR protocol to Print Servers with V5.30 software version can cause the Print Servers to hang. It must be restarted again. Please upgrade those Print Servers with new software. The error pop-up message does not disappear until the user either presses the Retry or Cancel button, even if the print job is finished. While printing using the LPR protocol, the progress count in the Windows print queue does not correspond to the actual progress of the print job. Printing several print jobs simultaneously, where at least one print job is using the LPR protocol in combination with some printer drivers, can cause all the print jobs to hang until the LPR print job is either finished or deleted. W95 only: Due to a limitation in Windows, it is not possible to print from DOS on the machine where AXIS Print Monitor is installed. If AXIS Print Monitor is installed on a server, it is possible to print from DOS from the clients.
