Axis cameras provide security for drivers and passengers using the public transport system in Most and Litvinov.
Public transportation company of Most and Litvinov has decided to equip newly delivered buses and trams with a security camera system.
Mission
DOPRAVNÍ PODNIK měst Mostu a Litvínova, the public transport company of Most and Litvinov, has been providing public transport services in the Most region since 1901. This company boasts a history stretching back more than one hundred years, but it also has a clear plan for the future - to be part of a smart city with a functional and comfortable transport system. However, public transport faces many negative phenomena such as vandalism or aggressive behavior towards passengers and drivers. To ensure safety, the company has installed Axis security cameras in public transport vehicles.
Solution
The objective of the camera monitoring system installed in public transport vehicles is to increase the safety of public transport for both passengers and drivers. The integrator, ONE SYSTEM, has therefore installed Axis security cameras as a part of the complex solution. Onboard cameras monitor the situation around the entry doors and the interior of the vehicle, while recordings from exterior cameras may be used as evidence in case of an accident.
Result
The public transportation company now requires the security camera system to be installed in all newly delivered vehicles. This system has been well received both by passengers and drivers. Cameras have proven to be a useful tool in fighting criminal activities occurring inside vehicles. Since the deployment of the system, vandalism and interior damage have been reduced. Recordings are also used as evidence by the police when investigating traffic accidents.
AXIS P39 Network Cameras are specially set up for use in public transportation vehicles where their application is always more demanding. These compact cameras are resilient and provide excellent picture quality.
Problems related to public transport
Ensuring a safe and comfortable public transport system is one of the most important aims for cities. There are several reasons: Public transport is economical, environmentally-friendly and reduces traffic, which in some cities is enormous. However, there are a few “buts”. The biggest “but” is the lack of security systems able to protect passengers and drivers. For example, based on a survey conducted by Rondo Data on behalf of SSI Group, Czechs are mostly afraid of being robbed when using public transport systems.
Therefore, DOPRAVNÍ PODNIK měst Mostu a Litvínova, a.s has decided to fight these issues effectively. The first step is the installation of security cameras outside and inside public buses and trams. By installing the security system, the public transportation company hopes to reduce criminality and vandalism inside vehicles and better protect drivers. Unfortunately, attacks on drivers, either verbal or physical, are not that uncommon. In particular, passengers tend to attack drivers in conflict situations, when they refuse to observe transportation rules.
Resilient and compact cameras installed
The camera monitoring system is being installed by ONE SYSTEM. This new system will be included in all newly delivered buses and trams. Buses belonging to the public transportation company are usually equipped with five interior cameras and one outside traffic accident camera - at the front of the vehicle. Trams are usually installed with eight or ten interior cameras, and usually one outside traffic accident camera - also at the front.
The task of AXIS P39 onboard cameras is to protect drivers and passengers and to deter potential troublemakers. “AXIS P39 cameras are specially set up for use in public transport vehicles, where their application is always more demanding. These cameras are resilient and compact units, and provide excellent picture quality,” says Václav Matura, Project manager at ONE SYSTEM. “Cameras must cover 100 % of the interior including the area around the door. Drivers see a live feed from the camera on a monitor and can continually see boarding or exiting passengers.
In a vehicle full of passengers, cameras are the only really reliable way to monitor the situation in the vehicle, “explains Václav Matura, who adds: “The front so-called traffic accident cameras significantly help the driver and provide reliable evidence in investigations. Cameras help to identify offenders, the degree of fault and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
A smart city is, above all, a safe city
Camera systems installed in public transport vehicles have immediately proven to be worth the investment as the rate of incidents has been reduced significantly. The Police department, which as the competent authority has unique access to recordings, have quickly learned to use it. Mainly drivers themselves appreciate the rise in safety as the cameras protect them in case of traffic accidents and in other situations, such as sudden braking. For example, a camera can reveal whether a passenger was holding on to a grab rail as required.
“Camera systems have become standard in public transport systems, which is a positive improvement for both passengers and drivers. This system is an important part of the development of smart cities as it increases safety as well as comfort not only for city residents but also for those across the entire region,” concludes Václav Matura.
