Axis cameras support innovative quality inspection in BMW Group vehicle production

Organization: BMW Group
Location: Munich , Germany
Customer need: Process monitoring
Munich , Germany,

A leading company in the automotive industry, the BMW Group is also a role model for innovative developments in the digital sector. Particular attention is paid to artificial intelligence (AI). Axis Communications supplies network cameras for this purpose, which are used in combination with in-house technologies such as AIQX (Artificial Intelligent Quality Next) in the BMW Group production process.

BMW iFACTORY

In the journey of digitalization, BMW iFACTORY stands tall as a visionary concept being rolled out across all BMW Group plants globally. At its core lies Artificial Intelligence (AI), revolutionizing vehicle production and permeating beyond to automate various processes, even in logistics. With over 400 AI solutions already in use, BMW Group is driving innovation at every level of operation.

AIQX: Axis cameras keep an eye on production

AIQX: Axis cameras keep an eye on production

At the forefront of quality automation is BMW Group's proprietary AIQX IT platform, leveraging sensors and AI to streamline quality control processes. Visual and audio-based inspections are paramount, facilitated by Axis network cameras strategically positioned along the assembly line to provide visual data. Continuously capturing vehicle images, these cameras, synchronized with real-time vehicle localization, ensure precise monitoring and inspection throughout production.

The cameras capture intricate details like the BMW logo on the hood and door handles, scrutinizing each component of a new BMW. Highly automated quality control takes place in fractions of a second in many locations. This entire process is orchestrated by AIQX and is based on AI – or, more precisely, on computer vision technology based on deep learning. The AIQX platform is thus able to automatically detect design flaws and various errors on the basis of millions of collected data points, primarily images and videos.

We are proud to see that our cameras are helping the BMW Group, as a digitalization pioneer, to use AI solutions in automotive production and optimize vehicle quality inspection. We also share the BMW Group's sustainability and data protection values, and we are benefiting from our professional exchange

Image quality counts

Image quality matters: AXIS P14 Series and AXIS Q1798-LE

The majority of the cameras deployed belong to the AXIS P14 Bullet camera series. Leveraging Axis Forensic WDR and Lightfinder technologies, these cameras produce lifelike colors and capture minute forensic details even in challenging lighting conditions or near-total darkness. This ensures exceptional image clarity, crucial for inspecting intricate details within the vehicle, regardless of varying light levels in the production facility.

The AXIS P14 Series ensures consistent image quality across varying exposure scenarios. Whether capturing a rating plate on a white or dark vehicle, the camera swiftly adapts, providing the AI with reliable, high-quality images for accurate analysis.

Another essential camera is the AXIS Q1798-LE Bullet Series, renowned for its exceptional forensic imaging capabilities. Equipped with a 10 MP resolution 4/3-inch image sensor and a Canon lens offering 12 to 48 mm focal length, it delivers detailed images and wide-angle views with a 90° horizontal field of view. Additionally, it boasts 4x zoom and electronic image stabilization (EIS) for enhanced performance.

Moreover, these professional cameras eliminate the need for costly camera gates with lighting, reducing investment expenses. With only one network connection required and plug-and-play functionality, they offer swift and hassle-free installation, contributing to lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Real time data analysis

Enhancing Production Efficiency with Real-Time Image Analysis

Real-time video images are swiftly transmitted to the cloud based AIQX platform for immediate analysis using advanced AI algorithms. Production line staff can access the analyzed data immediately on their smart devices, allowing them to swiftly identify and address any defects before the vehicle progresses further in production. For instance, staff can quickly verify if the correct rating plate has been applied in the right location. Any detected defects can be promptly rectified, significantly minimizing downstream errors and defects, resulting in substantial time and cost savings.

AIQX serves multiple functions, from identifying anomalies in the assembly process to verifying completeness and determining variants. As technology advances, it alleviates pressure on staff while ensuring consistent product quality. This revolutionary approach to end-to-end quality control is already deployed across all BMW Group plants worldwide, transforming vehicle construction processes.
