A durable and simple solution for the Prague Municipal Police

Prague Municipal Police officers have been searching for an ideal solution for a long time. The main goal was to solve the fundamental limitations of body-worn cameras in the field. The police struggled with the camera’s durability, especially because of its placement directly on the uniform, its short lifetime, problematic data transmission, and data safety. The Axis wearable camera system offered a solution to the existing obstacles with its functional and simple design.

AXIS W100 cameras provide a closed system that operates autonomously and seamlessly during day and night operation. The device itself is shatterproof and all-weather. It doesn’t use any SD card so the recording is secure and there is no risk of data misuse. Endurance is also important – the camera must be able to record for more than 12 hours, which is the time of one shift.

Camera as an independent witness

An independent witness in the form of a recording camera is a great help in resolving conflicts and legal disputes or providing evidence. Owning unedited footage of an intervention brings additional benefits to the police. Cameras can also serve as a security feature and protection for the police officers themselves, for example as a prevention of assault.

Other camera systems were problematic for the municipal police. For example, they struggled with waterproofness or data transferring. The body-worn cameras must be able to stay charged and functional throughout an officer's shift, all while handling the fieldwork.

Problem-solving solution

Obstacles have been efficiently solved with AXIS W100 cameras and their system, which is perfectly suited for demanding fieldwork. Easy usage combined with the efficiency and safety of the cameras is an advantage in challenging situations. The cameras are robust enough to withstand the unpredictabilities of the weather and the battery life fully covers the whole workday, making them suitable for everyday deployment.

The solution also includes easy data handling and is sufficiently secure against possible misuse. Unused camera recordings are self-deleted after a set period.

Practical functions for the field

The police also praise other features of the Axis body-worn cameras. The pre-recording function is practical and crucial in unpredictable situations as it can save a record of the situation before the camera is switched on. Axis also offers an app that allows officers to replay the footage on the spot, simplifying the written documentation of the situation. The camera footage is authentic, the camera "sees and hears" what the officer sees and hears. In exceptional situations, the stealth mode allows officers to record covertly without being exposed by the camera light.

The thing that surprised me most about the Axis wearable camera system was its utter simplicity. In the case of the Prague Municipal Police, the key was the integration of the system with the officers' chips and the app on their mobile phones, so the whole process of picking up, using, and handing over the camera is quick and easy, giving the officers maximum freedom.

Hundreds of cameras in service

In total 270 cameras are now in the equipment of the Prague Municipal Police and they are used daily by the officers who cover the 156-emergency line. Officers identify themselves with the personal chip when they pick up the cameras, so the cameras and their footage are paired with an app on their mobile phones.

Axis body-worn cameras have become regulatory service equipment, much like a gun or handcuffs. The officer must keep the camera easily available at all times, but the officer always makes the decision to activate the recording. This is because the camera does not serve to control the officer's actions, but rather to protect them.
