The centennial of the Battle of Verdun at the heart of a metro area’s security strategy.

Organization: City of Verdun
Location: Verdun, France
Customer need: Public safety
Verdun, France,

Security of a vast centralized territory based on a network of state-of-the-art cameras from Axis Communications.

Mission

As centennial commemorations of the Battle of Verdun approached in 2016, the city wanted to step up its security strategy by first developing a network of video protection cameras in the center of town, and then in five communities in greater metropolitan Verdun.

Solution

More than 90 Axis cameras were installed to ensure protection of the main infrastructures, certain cultural locations and places of worship, and several areas deemed vulnerable. Certain illegal dumping sites have also been identified and equipped. Various technologies are used based on their purposes. PTZ cameras are remote controlled and can focus on various centers of interest. Multisensors integrate four optical devices capable of filming 360 degrees and give an overall view of a situation. 4K cameras offer very high resolution for more detail, and cameras that read license plates allow vehicle identification.

Result

This project was very well received by the residents — they felt much more reassured. This has considerably decreased deterioration of buildings and preserved local heritage. It decreased delinquency by 35% in the heart of town the first year after installation, and up to 46% today. Eventually, the City of Verdun hopes to cover all the town’s districts and then complete installations at public buildings.

A region secured for the Battle of Verdun centennial

As centennial commemorations of the Battle of Verdun approached in 2016, the city of Verdun wanted to step up its security strategy by first developing a network of video protection cameras in the center of town, and then in five communities in greater metropolitan Verdun (Verdun, Belleville sur Meuse, Thierville sur Meuse, Bras sur Meuse and Belleray). This ensures optimum security for all citizens.

Major support for police every day

In anticipation of high attendance at the event, 37 initial security cameras were installed in the heart of Verdun. The main objective was to protect the main infrastructures, certain places of worship, and areas deemed vulnerable. 80% of the solution was implemented on the wireless network and 20% over fiber optics, which there weren’t much of at the time. In addition, several roving cameras have been installed to target specific events, such as illegal dumping.

The overload on the wireless network then motivated metropolitan Verdun to speed up deployment of fiber optics in the area to create a private, secured fiber network to support the project and link more than 25 sites, including city halls and various school buildings. The project was then expanded to several metro communities (Verdun, Belleville sur Meuse, Thierville sur Meuse, Bras sur Meuse and Belleray), with more than 90 cameras installed so far.

Delinquency down 35% in the first year

The City of Verdun now relies on a supervision center (CSU) that allows real-time viewing of the camera images and centralization of information at a single site. At the same time, the images are transmitted directly to the central police station in case analysis is needed.

Camera by clocktower

Law enforcement are thus informed round the clock and can use the images as required, whether for an ongoing investigation or a live incident. This project was very well received by the residents — they felt much more reassured. This has considerably decreased deterioration of buildings and preserved local heritage. It decreased delinquency 35% in the heart of town the first year after installation, and up to 46% today. Eventually, the City of Verdun hopes to cover all the town’s districts and then complete installations at public buildings.
